Hockey Alberta’s U18 Tier 2 Provincial championship tournament was held in the Town of Olds over the Easter long weekend.
A total of 8 teams were in Town to compete for the provincial banner.
Vegreville Wranglers Head Coach Trevor Ogrodnick appreciated the hospitality of the host committee at the Olds SportsComplex.
Vegreville went 3-0 to win Pool A at provincials in Olds before losing out in the semifinals to the Hanna Colts by the score of 3-2 in overtime.
Hanna went on to win the U18 Tier 2 provincial banner by outlasting the Fairview Falcons 2-1 in O.T. in the championship game on Sunday afternoon at the SportsComplex.
Meanwhile, the host Olds Grizzlys went 0-1-1 in Pool A competition and they were eliminated following the preliminary round.
Chances of advancing to the playoff round at provincials took a hit for the U18A Grizzlys during their second game of the tourney on Friday when a 3 to nothing second period lead over Fairview turned into what eventually finished as a 3-all tie. Grizzlys Head Coach Travis Thorburn breaks down where it slipped away.
Thorburn says they heard plenty of compliments for the job the Town of Olds did of hosting the tourney.
During the 3 games for Olds, Cai Challoner and Landon Erick both posted 1 goal and 1 assist, while goaltender Colin MacDougall made a total of 142 saves. MacDougall had 36 stops against the Glenlake Hawks, he kicked out 53 shots against Fairview, and he turned aside 53 more against Vegreville for a sparkling save percentage of .928 at provincials.
