The Red Deer RCMP Crime Reduction Team (CRT) completed a Targeted Response to Auto Theft (TRAP) operation this summer.
It took place in August and included a focus on recovering stolen vehicles and apprehending those responsible for the thefts.
Red Deer RCMP say 2 stolen vehicles were recovered, 4 vehicles were seized/towed, 18 new Criminal Code charges were laid, 2 individuals were arrested for outstanding warrants, 6 new possession for the purpose of trafficking charges were laid, along with 3 new possession charges, 4 TSA charges, and a tobacco tax act charge.
The Targeted Response to Auto Theft operation also resulted in the seizure of suspected methamphetamine, fentanyl, cocaine, and illegally obtained prescription pills. Other items seized included ammunition, Canadian currency, a shotgun, bear spray, a knife, and an extendable baton.
Anyone with information regarding criminal activity in Red Deer is asked to contact the Red Deer RCMP Detachment at 403-406-2200 or CRIMESTOPPERS.
Mounties remind the public to lock up houses, sheds, vehicles, and any other property that is easily accessible. Take photos and record serial numbers of property.
RCMP also encourage everyone to never leave running vehicles unlocked because nearly half of the vehicle thefts in Alberta over the past year have had the keys left inside.
