Olds Spartans find more success against Drumheller, sweep season series

The Olds Spartans football teamĀ capped off a season sweep of the Drumheller Titans last week.

Ecole Olds High School had won 35-25 in Drumheller back on September 6th, and last Thursday the Spartans posted a 27-13 triumph over the Titans at Normie Kwong Park.

After not beating Drumheller for a period of about 10 years, Spartans Head Coach Kent Lorenz points out that getting two wins over the Titans in 2024 is a great accomplishment. He says “the kids have come a long ways and we have a very young team, so a lot of them are learning how to win and learning what it takes to persevere when it is a close game.”

16-year-old Owen Reimer plays left tackle on offense and defensive tackle on the d-line as well. He explains what some of the keys were to earning a home win over Drumheller. Reimer says “we pushed the ball well on offense and we made good, crucial stops on defense.” Reimer had three sacks against Drumheller during last Thursday’s win.

16-year-old receiver Gabe Drent caught four touchdown passes in last week’s win. He says “I felt I played great. Rough at the start but then kept my head high and me and Aidan Knobben, quarterback, we played good at the end. We’ve played together since I was in grade 7. I’m in grade 10 now so three, just about four years and we just click on offense.”

Spartans Head Coach Kent Lorenz highlights the fact that their blocking opened up opportunities for Drent to score against the Titans. He says “Gabe had a fantastic game. As a receiving corps, and as an offense in general, we have quite a few people that can catch the ball and today happened to be Gabe’s day. Another day it could be Ethan, or it could be Radek, or it could be Carson or Nate. They all take turns and they celebrate each other when they have a good performance.”

The Spartans record now stands at 5 and 2. They remain 9th in the rankings for 3A schools with populations between 200 and 799 students. This is week 7 for the rankings.

On Friday, Ecole Olds High School will travel to High River to take on the Highwood Mustangs.

The next home game for the Spartans will be on Saturday, October 26th.

In addition to beating Drumheller in Olds on October 10th, EOHS also topped Carstairs 51-9 on October 5th.
