Health Care Aide program open house in Sundre on October 28

If you are interested in starting a career in health care, there is an upcoming opportunity to learn more about becoming a Health Care Aide.

The Economic Development Officer with the Town of Sundre says there will be an open house from 7 until 8:30pm on Monday, October 28th at the Sundre Community Centre.

Jon Allan notes the Health Care Aide certificate program is a fully accredited program, it starts on January 3rd, it lasts about 8 months, and it is being taught entirely in Sundre by Red Deer Polytechnic. He says “it just turns out that the Health Care Aide program is a really in demand program, particularly in rural communities, which is why they are beginning to expand this program here in Sundre.”

Allan explains what a Health Care Aide does. He says “so a Health Care Aide is the person that is kind of your front line dealing with the elderly, people who are sick and need help. They work in often assisted living facilities, long-term care facilities, they provide home care, they are usually empathetic people and they are definite health professionals. They also work under a regulated health professional like a nurse, in all of those different kinds of settings.”
He points out that when this program came to Sundre approximately two years ago, the Town did really well in recruiting potential students. Allan says “I know that being in Sundre, there is a great demand for this type of profession and so we are very much encouraging people who live in the Sundre area – they don’t have to live right in Sundre, they can live anywhere really in the Mountain View County area, or in Olds, or Clearwater County, wherever – to think about signing up for this program that can be taught right here. It will be a real hands on experience, exceptional learning opportunity because of small class sizes, and a really good way to get your foot in the door in the health care profession and take your career to the next level.”
The course is being administered by Campus Alberta Central in partnership with the Town of Sundre, Greenwood Neighbourhood Place, and the United Church in Sundre.
Allan encourages anyone interested to check out the Red Deer Polytechnic website because the Health Care Aide program in Sundre will be listed there. You can also contact GNP at 403-638-1011.
