Olds RCMP pedestrian safety tips for fall and winter evenings, Halloween night

With fall turning into winter and the days drawing shorter, Olds RCMP are passing along some advice in order for pedestrians to stay safe.
Mounties say to carry a flashlight or use your phone’s light when walking after dark, and to stay alert for turning vehicles even when you have the right of way.
Corporal Tim Dulmage with the Olds RCMP encourages pedestrians to use designated crosswalks and obey traffic signals even if no vehicles appear to be around. He also notes the ‘five second rule’ can help keep pedestrians, and in tonight’s case trick or treaters, safe after dark. He says “when you come to the crosswalk take five seconds before you step off the curb to assess the traffic, make sure it is safe before you go and that patience can save us all a little bit of a headache later.”
Corporal Dulmage asks motorists to be patient on Halloween (Thursday, October 31st). He says drivers should take a little bit of extra time and be careful because some of the young folks in town will be running around and they are awfully excited, so please give them a little extra room and space.
RCMP tips for adults on Halloween include only passing out commercially wrapped candy and snacks, do not invite children inside your home, and if you are going to be attending a party this Halloween – do not drink and drive or take substances from people you do not know and trust.
Other RCMP recommendations include keeping doorways clear and accessible and avoid using Halloween decorations that may pose a tripping hazard to trick or treaters.
Parents are also asked to inspect their children’s candy for any signs of tampering or unwrapped items and to keep pets indoors as they may be easily scared by children in costumes.
Alberta RCMP hope all of the monsters and superheroes stay safe in the streets on Halloween night.
