The No Stone Left Alone ceremony is slated for later this week at the Olds Cemetery.
Dianne Powney, Citizenship Officer with IODE, says they will have a bagpiper, a bugler, and two schools – Deer Meadow and Holy Trinity – helping them place rocks, poppies, and flags on all of the veteran’s grave stones.
According to Powney, this is their ninth year of doing it in partnership with the Olds Legion. She says “it was just awesome to watch the kids and the little kids their painted rocks were phenomenal. They were just absolutely gorgeous what they did. So it was really interesting to see the students and to hear them comment on ages of some of the veterans, and what they did for us and what it meant to them. We get letters from the students and some of them will make you cry.”
Powney points out that a special milestone is coming up for the International Order of Daughters of the Empire. She says “we have the thrift shop called Second Time Around. It is by the Blue Yak. All money that we earn at that shop goes back into our community. We help everyone through mind and body, education, seniors, babies, everybody. IODE is Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire and we’ve been in Olds since 1935. Next year is our 90th anniversary, so watch out for our celebration.”
Ahead of Remembrance Day, the No Stone Left Alone ceremony is coming up on Friday, November 1st at 1pm at the Olds Cemetery.
She hopes that some of the public will come out to see what the IODE Baron Tweedsmuir Chapter does.
