Americans head to the polls

It is election day in the U.S. as millions of Americans head to the polls to choose their next president.

As of midnight Monday, voters cast more than 82 million advance ballots, down from 110 million four years ago, according to the Associated Press.

Democratic candidate and sitting vice president Kamala Harris is looking to become the first female president while former president Donald Trump is seeking a second mandate for the Republicans.

Recent polls conducted by several U.S. firms suggest a race too close to call, warning it may take days or weeks to formally declare a winner.

Given the instability and violence that occurred after Joe Biden was declared the victor over Trump in 2020 culminating in the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. officials stepped up security at polling locations and at federal government facilities in the lead up to today.

Trump and Harris both focused their rhetoric on swing state Pennsylvania Monday night, with Trump speaking for nearly two hours at a rally in Pittsburgh and Harris making five rally stops in 12 hours.
