Alberta Releases Insect Survey Maps

Boots on the ground remain the most effective way to monitor insect populations in Alberta.

The 2024 insect survey maps are now available for public viewing on the Alberta Government’s website.

Each year, surveyors go out into the fields, using sweep nets and soil samples to collect crucial data for these population maps.

Producers across the province can participate by granting surveyors access to their land.

In the spring, surveyors focus on pea fields to check for damage from the pea leaf weevil.

In the fall, after harvest, surveyors target wheat fields to sample for wheat midge or count wheat stems for signs of the wheat stem sawfly.

If you’re a producer, you can help by reaching out and giving permission for surveyors to visit your fields. For more information or to sign up, head to alberta.ca.
