Canadian National Railway has announced it has reached a tentative four-year agreement with the union representing mechanical, clerical, and intermodal workers.
The deal follows a vote by employees, represented by Unifor, who authorized a strike in late November if an agreement wasn’t reached by January 1st.
Workers have been pushing for improvements in compensation, job security, and working conditions.
While CN has confirmed the agreement, the company says it will not release specific details until the deal is officially ratified.
The current collective agreement is set to expire on December 31st, the new deal affects about 3,300 employees.
This comes after a similar situation earlier this year, when both CN and Canadian Pacific Kansas City railways briefly halted operations following failed talks with the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference union.
That dispute ultimately led to the federal government mandating binding arbitration, which is scheduled for 2025.
