The charity hockey game held by the Mountain View Colts over the weekend was able exceed the total amount of money raised in 2024.
Gil Enns, Co-Chair Rural Alberta Chapter of the Motorcycle Ride For Dad, says no matter the score in the game the winners are men and families in this world are the winners. Red Deer defeated Mountain View 4-2 during last Friday’s Heritage Junior Hockey League game in Three Hills.
They don’t have all of the numbers tabulated yet, but Enns points out that unofficially over $15,000 dollars was raised for the fight against prostate cancer. He says “I think again it’s just important to acknowledge not only these young men that play this hockey and do this every year but the entire organization. They’ve been with us for so long and there is new people that come and go as well as the hockey players, but it’s just fantastic what they do for the cause.” About $13,000 dollars was raised through the Colts charity game in 2024.
According to Enns, the Mountain View Colts started teaming up with the Ride For Dad for the charity hockey game in 2011 and since then it is close to a quarter of a million dollars that they have donated to the cause. He says “that is the great thing about that. You know, you get that into their heads when they are young like that and not just for them when they get to another age about 20 years from now. They have families, it’s their own families, their own parents that are, you know, could be coming to that age. So the importance of them being aware of the situation and being aware of the disease and getting the word out not only just for themselves for later on but everybody else in their families and people around them. It’s great.”
The Colts will continue to play their home games away from home for the remainder of the regular season and the playoffs, following the removal of the ice at the Didsbury Memorial Complex in December due to an ammonia leak in the condenser unit.
Enns adds, more information will be posted soon about their plans for this summer on the Rural AB Motorcycle Ride For Dad Facebook page. He says “we’re going to do a little different ride this year. I’m not going to be around, so we are going to do a bit of a break from doing our big ride. Our plans are to do what we call a ‘Ride Alone Together’ and we pick out destinations. People can ride that throughout the summer and raise funds towards the cause doing it that way.”
Enns notes that the proceeds from the annual events for the Rural Alberta Motorcycle Ride For Dad are invested in ground-breaking prostate cancer research and life-saving public awareness campaigns of the disease and the importance of early detection.
