Alberta’s Premier “heartened” to see 30-day pause on tariffs

Danielle Smith is slated to travel to Washington, D.C. a couple times this month to try and find more “win-win solutions on trade and security” for Canada and the United States.

In a statement issued on Monday, Alberta’s Premier pointed out that she will continue diplomatic efforts with her fellow Premiers on Capitol Hill next week. Later in the month, she will return there for the National Governors’ Association conference.

Monday’s announcement of a 30-day hold on the tariffs by the United States on Canadian goods resulted in Smith exclaiming that “diplomacy has won the day. Let us ensure that continues, as we know there is much more work ahead of us.”

Smith highlighted that Alberta has been calling for the appointment of a Canadian fentanyl czar to coordinate the targeting of traffickers of the drug as part of a joint effort with our southern neighbours since learning from U.S. administration officials and others that it would be a critical piece needed to reach a deal to avoid tariffs.

She was “heartened to see that U.S. President Donald Trump and the Government of Canada have agreed to a plan to crack down on fentanyl trafficking and other illegal activities at our shared border.”
