The Mountain View Colts hosted the Red Deer Vipers on Saturday night in game #4 of their Heritage Junior Hockey League Northern Division Semi Finals series, but were unable to keep their season alive at the Carstairs Memorial Arena.
The Colts would fall to the Vipers by a score of 3-2 in overtime, and 3-1 in the best of 5 series.
Red Deer would enter tonight’s contest with a chance to advance to the Northern Division Finals and a matchup with the Sylvan Lake Wranglers who advanced past the Airdrie Thunder 3 games to none.
Things would get off to a slow start for Mountain View, who found themselves down 2-0 just 3:02 into the game. Kieran Armitage would fire home a powerplay tally, before Brady Leroux would snap one home on a 2 on 1.
Aidan Saunders would get one back on the power play for the Colts, who would enter the 2nd down 2-1.
Cohen Richardson would tie things up for Mountain View in the 2nd, setting up a big finish.
The 3rd period would see both teams pick up grade A scoring chances but no winner, as overtime would be needed.
The Colts managed to kill of a full 2 minutes power play in the extra frame, but a deflected point shot from Mason Sabasch lobbed over Nicholas Smith would seal Mountain View’s fate.
Smith ended up stopping 29 shots, after allowing 2 on 5 shots to start the game. Meyer Gaume was solid meanwhile for Red Deer, earning a 35 save win.
The Vipers now move on to battle the Sylvan Lake Wranglers in the Northern Division Finals.
Colts head coach, Rob Doig, was heartbroken postgame.
The next major event ahead for the Mountain View Colts is their annual awards banquet, more details on that will be announced in the coming weeks.
