Wildfire season in Alberta commenced over the weekend.
In a statement, Todd Loewen – the province’s Minister of Forestry and Parks – noted that Alberta entered the 2025 wildfire season with 10 active fires. He adds, that is a significant change from a year ago when there were 60 on March 1st.
More than $3.4 million dollars in funding was provided last year by the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta (FRIAA) for 38 FireSmart projects across the province. According to Loewen, fireguard projects are currently underway in the Bow Valley near Canmore, as well as Cypress Hills Provincial Park, Hinton, Whitecourt and Slave Lake.
Mountain View County has issued some safety reminders for when conditions are dry and windy. The County encourages residents to never leave a fire unattended, to keep water or a hose nearby, to burn in a safe and contained area, plus to monitor prior burn areas for re-sparking.
