Emergency Preparedness Week continues until this Friday, May 10th.
Stephanie Bibault, Deputy Fire Chief and the Director of Emergency Management with the Town of Olds, says the theme for this year is ‘Be Prepared, Not Scared’ and be informed with what to do in case of an emergency. She says “As much information as you can get the better. If you have a plan on where you are going to go, if you have to evacuate before hand that is better. Having a 72-hour kit, I can’t drive that home fast enough. Teaching your children what to do also in case of an emergency because when your kids know, it empowers them instead of making them feel scared. If they know what to do, everybody can get on board and be a team.”
Bibault points out that there are several types of emergency scenarios that residents of the Town of Olds need to be prepared for including tornadoes, inclement weather, a train derailment, or a hazardous material incident.
She notes that a 72 hour kit should enable you and your family to be self sufficient for 3-days in the case of an emergency. It should include essentials such as water, food, medications, and critical documents.
More information is available on the Town of Olds website. Pamphlets on each individual emergency can be picked up at the Community Connection Centre, or they can be found on the Alberta Emergency Management site as well.
