A resident of Carstairs faces charges following a lengthy RCMP investigation into drug offences.
Corporal Gina Slaney, Public Information Officer with the Alberta RCMP Media Group, notes that the suspected criminal activity first came to light in October of last year. She says “Didsbury RCMP received a tip that some people were using this butane extractor and they were also in possession of a lot of controlled substances. So, Didsbury RCMP and Airdrie RCMP Crime Reduction Unit – we call them CRU – they worked together and built this investigation.” RCMP point out that a butane extractor is “volatile in nature if not monitored/operated correctly, and possessed an explosion/fire risk to the public of Carstairs.”
Slaney adds, just recently two search warrants were executed as part of the ongoing investigation. She says “when we are dealing with controlled substances we like to use the assistance of the Clandestine Lab Enforcement and Response Team, which we call CLEAR. So they help us be safe when we do these type or search warrants. So a search warrant was executed in Carstairs (at a residence) as well as at an Airdrie business. As you can see from the media release, we seized multiple drugs and weapons during this investigation or during these search warrants.”
A 59-year-old man from Carstairs, Lex Matt Bronee, faces over 20 charges. She says “for example assault, uttering threats, a lot of drug charges – trafficking a controlled substance, possession for the purpose of trafficking a controlled substance. Numerous offences. He will be appearing at Alberta Court of Justice in Airdrie on April 10th to answer to these charges.”
