Self defence, problem solving among highlights of upcoming GNP event for Grade 4-7 students

Greenwood Neighbourhood Place in Sundre has a child safe program coming up this week.

Program Coordinator Bree Odd says it is a 2-hour program for kids in Grades 4 to 7 – it was just opened up to Grade 7s as well – and it helps kids build confidence and develop quick thinking skills. She says “they get the opportunity to practice real life decision making in a fun and interactive environment. They really get to build some awareness and communication around self defence and problem solving while connecting with really positive peer role models.”

She adds, it is about self defence and so they get an opportunity to learn different ways of talking with strangers, and a little bit about the circle of trust. Odd says “they learn how to practice vocal drills that keep them safe. You know, what to say to people to make sure they are aware of their surroundings and just some hands on kind of self defence practices that they can really take out and use just to keep them safe when they are outdoors. So I think the biggest thing is it is a safe environment to do some of this learning that maybe they’ve not had an opportunity to have before.”

Join them on Friday, March 21st from 9am until 11 at River Valley Elementary School in Sundre. Check out more details on the Greenwood Neighbourhood Place Facebook page.
