Be the leaf of the party: Fly the Canadian flag, support annual fundraiser for Rotary Club of Olds

Showing your Canadian spirit is more important now than ever and it could help take a special fundraiser in the Town of Olds to new heights this year.

National pride and support for the Rotary Club of Olds will once again come together as subscriptions to the third annual Fly The Flag event. Randy Smith, Past President of the Rotary Club of Olds and Coordinator for the fundraiser, notes that they did 75 in year one, 150 in year two, and this year their goal is at least 300. Smith says “well I think first of all, community support for the Olds Rotary Club is always phenomenal so we kind of build on that. But I think, you know, when people see those flags on the front lawns of their neighbours and the Canadian pride shows through and people just want to participate in this because it looks so cool driving down the street. You know, there’s not a better way to show your Canadian pride than to fly the flag.”

With Team Canada winning hockey’s Four Nations Cup, plus trade wars and tariffs in the news, Smith is expecting plenty of people to sign up to Fly the Flag on their lawn from May 12th until July 5th. He says “oh I think so. Yeah, we’ve had people calling us already. Actually, a month ago people were calling us and saying ‘hey, are you going to be doing the flag thing again this year?’ So definitely we will be renting the flags again this year.”

Purchasing a ticket to rent a 3′ by 5′ Canadian flag to be installed on your front lawn can be done by going to the Rotary Club of Olds Facebook page and following the links. The cost is $75.

Smith says the 185th Olds Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron will receive a portion of the proceeds for upgrades to their hall. The Air Cadets will also be helping the Rotarians put the flags out and take them down.
