A couple of student athletes from Alberta have been recognized for their efforts on and off the volleyball court this season for the Durham College Lords.
Zachery Ellis, Sports Information and Marketing Coordinator at Durham College, says Erin Black a graduate from Didsbury High School and Brooke Young a graduate from Chestermere High School both received awards at the team’s recent banquet.
Ellis says Erin Black was in her first year with the Lords and she won the Bert Dejeet Memorial Award. He says “so we hand that out every year to the male and female student athletes with the top overall GPA (grade point average) and there was a two-way tie on the women’s side. She had a perfect GPA and we recognized her with that academic award at the banquet.”
He points out that Brooke Young was in her fourth year with the Lords and she was honoured with the Stan Marchut team MVP award for women’s volleyball. He says “Brooke Young, actually, she passed 1,000 career assists. Durham College has had a women’s volleyball team since the early to mid-80s and she is only the second DC player all-time to pass 1,000 and I believe she is only 76 behind the all-time leader. So very competitive program and for the last four years, Brooke has been a really key piece of that.”
Durham hosted the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Volleyball National Championship last month at its Oshawa, Ontario campus. The Lords wound up losing out in the bronze semi-final game to the Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners out of B.C.
