Rory McIlroy finally wins at Augusta, joins career grand slam club

When it was all said and done on Sunday in Augusta, Georgia shouts of “Rory! Rory! Rory!” rang out.

In his 17th start at the Masters, Rory McIlroy outlasted England’s Justin Rose by sinking a birdie putt on the first playoff hole – the 18th hole – to finally win the coveted green jacket for the first time in his illustrious career. Both players had finished at 11 under par (277) through four rounds of play.

It is the 5th major title for the superstar from Northern Ireland and he is now one of just six men who are part of professional golf’s modern career grand slam winners club (Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy). He is the first European to join the club.

The career grand slam includes all four major championships – the Masters, the U.S. Open, the British Open, and the PGA Championship.

This is also the first major title victory for McIlroy since he won the PGA Championship back in 2014. His other major wins were at the 2011 U.S. Open, 2012 PGA Championship, 2014 British Open.

Canada’s Corey Conners ended up tied for 8th place at minus 5 (283). Conners finished tied with Americans Xander Schauffele and Zach Johnson, along with Australia’s Jason Day.
