Mountain View Colts Name Ron Doig As Head Coach

There’s a new bench boss in Didsbury.

Ron Doig has been named head coach of the Mountain View Colts ahead of the 2024/2025 Heritage Junior Hockey League season.

Doig joins the Colts following the departure of Dan Visser after 2 seasons with the team.

A long-time volunteer for the Olds Minor Hockey Association, Doig outlines some of his experience in coaching.

“I moved to Olds about 10 years ago from Hanna where I did some minor hockey coaching. I joined the AA program here in Olds and coached the Bantam team for a couple years and from there moved onto the Midget AA program. I’ve spent a couple years in Red Deer with the U-15 AAA program under Justin Jarmolicz, then a couple years volunteering in the AJHL”

Doig describes himself as a coach who is hard nosed and values accountability, adding that he aims to set the bar high this fall.

“We’re looking to get in there and have fun and get the kids back enjoying the program, and I think that’s maybe the biggest thing is building the “program”. That’s the kind of thing we always talk about, it’s not a 1-year thing but a 3- or 4-year project to make the program better as we go along. So, at the end of the day, we do have a goal in sight, and that’s winning a championship”

He adds that he is familiar with a lot of the pieces current on the Colts roster through his time in OMHA and scouting in the Alberta Junior Hockey League.

Doig was an assistant coach for the Olds Grizzlys during the 2020/2021 season, while serving as a scout in 2021/2022 for the Sherwood Park Crusaders.
