Mounties say a shooting incident with an Alberta RCMP officers involved in it occurred near Carstairs over the weekend.
Police report that there were no injuries suffered to members of the public, officers or the suspect during this incident.
It happened at about 11:40pm on Friday (June 21st), when Alberta RCMP were notified by Calgary Police Service (CPS) of a suspect that had previously fled from police. The suspect was being covertly followed by HAWCS helicopter.
Under a joint response coordinated by the Alberta RCMP Real Time Operations Centre (RTOC), officers from CPS along with RCMP from Airdrie, Didsbury, Olds, and Sundre were successful in disabling the vehicle with a covert tire deflation device on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway near Highway 581.
According to RCMP, a traffic stop was conducted and there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and police. No injuries were reported to either the suspect or police.
Verbal contact with the suspect was established by RMCP, the incident was successfully deescalated, and the suspect surrendered to police.
According to a press release, to comply with legislative requirements, the Director of Law Enforcement has been notified and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been deployed to oversee the investigations into this incident.
