Local Senior Targeted By Grandparent Scam, Didsbury RCMP Searching For Suspect

Didsbury RCMP are warning the public about the grandparent scam after a local senior was recently defrauded out of thousands of dollars.

Mounties say that on June 13th a local senior received a call from a male stating he was her grandson. The man also noted that he was in jail and needed bail money.

According to police, “a different male showed up to the home of the senior and the money was physically given to them”.

RCMP have prepared a composite sketch of the male suspect and they are asking for assistance from the public to identify him.

Anyone with information about this crime or those responsible is asked to contact the Didsbury RCMP Detachment at 403-335-3381, your local police, or CRIMESTOPPERS.

Didsbury RCMP also want to educate local seniors again about the grandparent scam.

Corporal Shane O’Neil with the Didsbury RCMP says “it is essential that we speak to our seniors about this trending crime as it is easily preventable with education.”

Mounties remind the public to never give out personal information over the phone or online to someone you don’t know. They say the police or the courts will not ask for personal information over the phone and bail is always paid in person at a courthouse or correctional centre.
