Mounties in Olds dealt with a rare occurrence recently.
A stolen vehicle and military equipment was recovered by Olds RCMP at a rural property on Range Road 25 in Mountain View County on July 25th.
Staff Sergeant Warren Wright says the items recovered included three white phosphorous grenades. According to Wright, “they are military ordinance they are designed as anti-personnel, they are designed to cause/inflict harm, grievous bodily harm and death.”
He adds, they contacted their RCMP Explosives Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team out of Edmonton and they referred Olds RCMP to the Canadian Forces Military. Wright says “they dispatched a team out of Wainwright to come to the Olds Detachment, identify them, safe handle them, and take them back for disposal.”
The Canadian Forces Explosives Ordinance Disposal team came to the Olds RCMP Detachment on July 26th.
Staff Sergant Wright points out that it is an incredibly rare case because they haven’t see this type of device – white phosphorous grenades – in our community ever. He says “the investigation is still open. According to Wright, they are still looking for the person responsible for possessing them, and trying to determine how they came into possession of them, where they came from.”
He adds, anyone with information regarding this case can contact the Olds RCMP Detachment at 403-556-3323 or CRIMESTOPPERS.
