The Mountain View Mavericks are nearly ready to depart towards Ontario, as the local Junior B Tier 1 lacrosse team makes their final preparations ahead of the Founders Cup national championship tournament in Hamilton.
The Mavericks will represent Alberta after a 14-5-1 regular season in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League, that propelled them to the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.
The Mav’s RMLL run came to an end against the Rockyview Silvertips in the Central Division Finals, they would lose that best of 3 series 2 games to none.
Rockyview was the host of this year’s provincial tournament, the Larry Bishop Memorial Arena, which would allow the Mavericks to enter.
The Mavericks played some of their best lacrosse over the Heritage Day long weekend, earning wins against the Calgary Shamrocks, Fort Saskatchewan Rebels and against the host Silvertips, leading them to earn a spot at nationals as Alberta’s official representative.
Mavs General Manager, Brad Bouchard, says after some fundraising efforts over the past week, they are ready to hit the road.
“I’m super proud of the community, all our supporters and people who have helped us out with this over the past 7 days. It’s special, it’s heartwarming and really cool how everyone came together for this.
“We’re there, we’ve hit our target and we are ready to hit the road”
Bouchard says he and few other volunteers will be driving out east, while the rest of the team will fly out the day prior to the tournament.
The Mavericks will open up their Founders Cup campaign on August 19th, when they take on the Nova Scotia Privateers.
