The annual Howard Smith Memorial Team Roping event is set for this weekend.
Glen Smith points out that it is a fundraiser for the ALS Society of Alberta. He notes they donated $13,500 dollars to the Society last year. Smith says “our Dad was diagnosed with ALS and so he was an avid team roper. While he was still alive for a few years we got started with this. The ALS Society of Alberta was working with him and stuff and so he decided ‘why don’t we start raising some money for it?’. I think we started in ’02, 2002. So that is how it really got going and then it’s just grown. Especially the last few years, it has grown quite a bit.”
Smith explains what the agenda looks like for Sunday. He says “start entries for the roping at 11:30, I think, and then the roping should start at 1. We have some businesses and people that have donated things that we will raffle off that day. Following the roping we will have a kids dummy roping, for young kids, and prizes for that. Then we do a BBQ, complementary BBQ, and refreshments and then hand out our prizes and visit afterwards.”
Smith says the Arena is located 8 kilometers north of Highway 27 on the west side of Range Road 44.
