Alberta RCMP Emergency Response Team deployed to arrest violent suspect in Innisfail

A 29-year-old resident of Innisfail faces charges following two separate incidents in the past week.

Police say the suspect was arrested for assault and later released with conditions after Innisfail RCMP were called to assist with a dispute on August 17th. Mounties note that “it was learned that the suspect had assaulted the victim by punching him.”

Innisfail RCMP once again attended the same property following a call on August 20th. The suspect returned there contrary to his release conditions. A warrant was obtained for police to enter the residence after the suspect had yelled and uttered threats against them.

When negotiations for surrender produced no results, RCMP breached the door. According to police, the suspect attempted to spear the officers with a sharpened hockey stick and threw human feces at them. Officers deployed pepper spray and a taser which were ineffective and the suspect barricaded himself in a bathroom.”

Assistance with the arrest was needed from the RCMP Emergency Response Team in the form of CS gas – commonly known as tear gas – being deployed into the bathroom. At that point RCMP say the suspect surrendered without further incident.

Keenan Joseph Sziva faces four counts of assault of a police officer with a weapon, as well as one charge of assault, and another charge for breach of release conditions. He has been remanded into custody and a court date in Red Deer has been set for August 27th.
