The Ecole Olds High School Spartans started their football season with a dominant victory on Friday afternoon at Normie Kwong Park.
The Spartans kicked off 2024 by blanking Calgary’s North Trail High School Nighthawks 39 to nothing on August 30th.
Spartans Head Coach Kent Lorenz expected sort of the outcome they had. He notes they have been practicing hard and had a good main camp. According to Lorenz, the kids were ready to go.
If he were to hand out game balls for Friday’s win, Lorenz points out that they would have gone to Sam Andrew on defence, along with Radek Heppner on offence and quarterback Aidan Knobben. He says “Aidan Knobben looked spectacular this game. He is a student of the game and works hard at his craft.”
The Ecole Olds High School Spartans saw their provincial playoff hopes dashed last November at Setters Place at Great Chief Park in Red Deer. The Spartans were unable to advance to the Tier 3 provincial high school semi-finals as they fell 49-9 to the Cardston Cougars. OHS had finished the 2023 regular season ranked second among Tier 3 schools with a record of 6-2. Lorenz says “I expect us to compete at the provincial level again this year. With 17 players moving on from grade 12 we have a young team, but I expect a lot of growth and I expect us to be as good or better than last year.”
The Spartans will carry a 1-0 record this season into their next game which is coming up on Friday, September 6th against the Titans in Drumheller.
