Airdrie RCMP investigating a Bitcoin scam

Mounties say there have been six different instances dating back to Monday (September 16th) of community members receiving scam Bitcoin emails.

According to police, the emails ask for the victim’s personal information including house photos, address, and phone number. The scammer states they have seen the victim’s online browsing history and have access to their computers and smartphones. The scammer also notes that they have footage of the victim doing private things in their bedroom and screen shots have been created from those photos. Lastly, the scammer then requests $2,000 of United States currency in Bitcoin in order to wipe out this information.

Airdrie RCMP are advising citizens that this is a scam and please do not send any money to anyone unless you know it is a legitimate company.

Anyone with information regarding this scam can contact the Airdrie RCMP Detachment or CRIMESTOPPERS.
