The opening ceremonies of Hockey Alberta’s U18 Tier 2 Provincial Championship tournament are coming up this afternoon at 1:30 at the Olds SportsComplex.
There were two games played on the opening day of provincials. The first game saw Vegreville top Fairview 6-4. Then last night – as heard on 96.5 CKFM – the Glenlake Hawks from Calgary defeated the host team – the Olds Grizzlys – 2 to nothing.
Grizzlys goaltender Colin MacDougall made 36 saves on 38 shots by Glenlake. However, Olds was unable to find the back of the net as Riley Coleman stopped all 35 shots he faces to earn the shutout for the Hawks. Coleman also stopped Grizzlys defenceman Landon Erick on a penalty shot in the second period. Glenlake netted a shorthanded goal by Lief Moller to break a scoreless tie at the 3:59 mark of the third period, before tacking on an even strength tally by Cael Bjorndalen to round out the scoring at 9:01.
Following this afternoon’s opening ceremonies the U18 A Grizzlys will face off with Fairview at 2:15pm.
96.5 CKFM will have more live U18 Tier 2 Provincial coverage on Saturday afternoon at 1:30pm when the Grizzlys play their final preliminary round game against the Vegreville Wranglers.
The championship game of the provincial tourney is set for Sunday, March 31st at 4pm at the Olds SportsComplex.
