The Ecole Olds High School Spartans walloped the Wolverines to set up a playoff match up with Bow Valley.
On Saturday (October 26th) at Normie Kwong Park, the Spartans triumphed 62-21 over the visiting Canmore Wolverines.
It was the final game of the high school football regular season for Olds and it avenged a 39-14 loss to the Wolverines in Canmore back on September 28th.
Spartans quarterback Aidan Knobben says “you know we came in a little bit nervous, thinking about last time we played them and it didn’t go our way but we went in there with a good attitude, commitment, inspiration, and we put the foot on the pedal and we beat them. One of the best things you can experience with a team, man. Honestly, just hope I can do that again this weekend.”
The 15-year-old Knobben isn’t satisfied with only having regular season success in 2024, especially when the Spartans have this amazing playoff opportunity ahead of them. He says “it was the most points we’ve put up all year and we really just, like I said, kept the foot on the pedal and we just didn’t let go, we just kept going, kept warring. Felt good and always just looking for room for improving in what I can do better and what we can do better as a team, and that’s been my mindset for the season.”
The Spartans will be the home team and they will be representing the Big Sky Conference when they meet Bow Valley from the Rocky View Schools Sports Association in Red Deer this Friday evening for playoff high school football action. He says “very special, it means a lot because if we lose we go home so we all are trying to keep our head high and go into that game and get the win. I started my football journey here from Pee Wee and to now be on the high school team where I used to admire high school players when I was younger, it’s a really sick feeling to be on this team.”
Olds finished the regular season with 7 wins and 2 losses and moved up from 9th last week to 8th in Football Alberta’s Week 9 Rankings for 3A schools with a population of between 200 and 799 students.
