The 2024 football season came to an end for the Olds Pee Wee Huskies on Saturday, October 26th at Normie Kwong Park.
Dennis Yurchevich, Head Coach of the Pee Wee Huskies, says they lost the ‘fun bowl’ playoff game between the bottom two teams in the league last Saturday by the score of 28-26 to the Drumheller Terrapins.
He notes this was a rebuilding year for the Huskies and they ended up finishing with a record of 1 and 5 during the season. Yurchevich says “a lot of the scores that we put up throughout the course of the year definitely did not reflect the heart, and the skill, and the development that our players had. Our 12-man league folded this year and all of the teams dropped down into our 9-man league. So our first four games of the year were against very competitive teams who last year did compete in the 12-man league. We definitely struggled a bit, but we certainly held our own.”
Yurchevich adds, the Huskies had 25 active roster players this season and one red-shirt player.
He discusses the role of the Pee Wee Huskies football program in Olds. Yurchevich says “we are definitely the feeder program for the bigger two clubs and we try to instill as much of the love of the game, and the skills, and the ethics of the sport into our players as we can while still striving for success. The other two clubs are experiencing great success this year thanks to the dedication of their coaches, as well as all of the players who have been fortunate enough to work their way up through the system.”
The Olds Bantam Bulldogs will play for their league title for the third season in a row when they travel to Ponoka on Saturday, November 1st. The Bulldogs won their semi-final match up by the score of 47-20 over Sylvan Lake last Saturday at Normie Kwong Park.
The Ecole Olds High School Spartans will play a playoff game on Friday night (November 1st) in Red Deer against Bow Valley after finishing the regular season with a 7 and 2 record.
