Red Deer RCMP Alert Public About Increase In Gold Scams In The Area

Mounties are warning the public about a jewellery scam.

According to Red Deer RCMP, there has been a recent increase in gold scams in the area. Police say people have been approached in places including parking lots, gas stations, and other public locations. The suspects typically offer “gold jewellery” for sale, as gifts, or offer to trade for gas.

Red Deer RCMP note that the jewellery is not genuine and is offered at very low prices. The scam often sees the suspects convey that they have lost their bank card and are not able to access the funds needed to continue their trip. Police point out that the suspects are typically driving newer rental vehicles and sometimes have children with them.

Red Deer RCMP say these types of incidents can be considered fraud or false pretenses and are criminal offences. Anyone who is approached by someone trying to sell gold jewellery is encouraged to avoid getting involved and instead call local police right away to report the incident. Victims are asked to, if possible, please provide any licence plate numbers or any photos of the suspects or vehicles to help with the investigation.

Individuals with information about frauds within Red Deer can contact the Red Deer RCMP Detachment at 403-406-2200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
