Alberta’s government is continuing its support for cultural industries, which play a significant role in the province’s economy and help share Alberta’s stories with audiences both at home and abroad.
Recent data from Statistics Canada shows that in 2022, Alberta’s cultural industries contributed $2.5 billion to the provincial economy and sustained over 19,000 jobs.
To build on this success, the government has invested more than $4.2 million this year through the Alberta Media Fund, providing nearly 190 grants to support locally produced film and television, books, magazines, and music.
According to a press release, Budget 2024 includes an additional $8 million for the Alberta Media Fund to support key sectors such as book publishing, magazine publishing, film and television production, and music organizations.
This funding will continue to foster economic growth and strengthen Alberta’s cultural identity.
So far this year, over $1.6 million in grants have been allocated to support the music, book, and magazine publishing sectors.
In the film and television sector, every dollar invested by the government generates four dollars in return.
The Alberta Made Production Grant has already provided $1.4 million to support 16 film and television projects this year.
Additionally, the Alberta Made Screen Industries Program has awarded $1 million for project and script development and invested nearly $200,000 to support post-production jobs in Alberta.
The news release from the province concludes that these investments are helping to promote Alberta’s thriving cultural industries and ensuring it remains a destination for film and television production.
