The last Wednesday of February is an annual opportunity to celebrate kindness, caring, and inclusivity.
This year Pink Shirt Day falls on February 26th. It originated in Nova Scotia in 2007 when two teenage boys organized a movement to have students at their school wear pink shirts in support of a fellow student who was bullied for wearing one.
Lauren MacMullen, Director of Youth, Family and Community Services with BGC Olds and Area, points out that – as they do every year – the Boys and Girls Club is selling pink shirts, but there is a new way to support the cause for 2025. According to MacMullen, they have paper pink shirts around the community that you can purchase for $2 dollars each. She says “put your name on it, make a design on it, and the business will put it up on their window and all those proceeds go to to BGC Olds and Area and what we do to promote anti-bullying and all the resources and programs we have in our hub in the schools. So you can find those paper shirts at ATB Financial, Dunrite Printing, Rocky Mountain Fly Shop, and Diamond Edge Services. So those are a great way to also support us this Pink Shirt Day.”
Their pink shirts are available until February 11th. Go online to the website bgcolds.ca or the BGC Olds and Area social media channels to purchase one. MacMullen says “we support it because it empowers children and youth to recognize and stand up towards bullying. We are also a big advocate on improving self esteem and self confidence and being able to deal with those situations and stand up for yourself. So we have programs within BGC for anti-bullying and we also promote kindness and we talk about those things in our daycare and our childcare everyday on how to be kind and share and make sure that you feel like you belong.”
Wear your pink shirt with pride and stand up against bullying on Wednesday, February 26th.
