Impaired Driver Who Attempted To Flee Arrested By Innisfail RCMP

Innisfail RCMP have arrested an impaired driver who attempted to flee from police.

At about 3am on Sunday (June 16th), a vehicle with a burnt out tail light was spotted by Innisfail RCMP on C&E trail in Red Deer County.

Emergency lights were activated by RCMP to signal the driver to pull over and stop. However, the driver accelerated and police say he immediately lost control of the vehicle and rolled into the ditch.

Mounties say the driver was extricated from the vehicle, transported to hospital, and later released with minor injuries.

An 18 year old man from Innisfail faces a charge of failing to stop for a peace officer, plus an impaired driving provincial administrative penalty. His driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days and the vehicle impounded for 30 days.

Staff Sergeant Ian Ihme says the individual involved in this incident is facing several thousands of dollars in fines and impound fees plus the inconvenience of losing his licence. He adds, while the dollar value is high, it could have been much worse. According to Sergeant Ihme, impaired driving is the leading criminal cause of death in Canada with an average of four people killed each day.

Innisfail RCMP remind citizens that if you choose to consume alcohol or other substances, to plan ahead and have a safe ride home.
