National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations are coming up in the Town of Sundre.
Carrie Couch, Executive Director at the Sundre & District Museum, says they have Metis programming running for about 45 minutes and it begins at 11am on Friday, June 21st and there will also be another in the afternoon at 1 o’clock. She says “Last year they talked about the fur trade, Metis culture, showed us a little jigging and it was great fun.”
She feels it is important to highlight National Indigenous Peoples Day because it showcases our Indigenous roots that were in Sundre. Couch says “It represents Treaty 6 and 7, and then our Region 3 Metis. It’s also just great learning for everybody. It gives the Indigenous nations their opportunity to teach and it gives them a platform and a voice within our communities and I know the citizens of Sundre and area certainly enjoy that.”
Couch notes they will have other guests as well. She says “Stoney Nakoda is joining us also at 11am and their programming should go about 45 minutes to an hour. They are setting up our teepee in Pioneer Village and will have some Elders here doing some cultural teaching.”
