The first three performances of CFR 49 have paved the way into the weekend for the top cowboys, cowgirls, and stock at Westerner Park at Red Deer.
Three more performances are coming up as part of the final two days.
Day money on Friday, November 3rd in barrel racing went to Carlee Rae Otero from Texas. She was second on Wednesday, ninth on Thursday, and first on Friday thanks to a time of 13.53 seconds.
For the second straight night, Clint Laye from Cadogan was the best of the bunch in bareback. He rode Vold Rodeo’s True Gritt to the tune of 88.75 points.
Cody Cassidy from Donalda had the swiftest run in steer wrestling with a 3 and 6.
3.5 seconds was the top time in team roping and that was done by two different tandems. Brady Tryan from Montana and Calgary Smith from Oregon, as well as Rhen Richard from Utah and Jeremy Buhler from Arrowwood wound up splitting the first and second place day money.
Its been all or nothing for Big Valley’s Zeke Thurston this week. He was bucked off on Wednesday but bounced back to place first on Thursday, and he did it again on Friday. Thurston led the way last night with an 88.75 on Calgary Stampede’s Yesterdays Delivery.
Haven Meged from Montana posted the fastest go on Friday in tie down roping with a time of 8.3 seconds.
Ashton Sahli from Lacombe didn’t make it the full 8 seconds on opening night in bull riding but he has been on fire since then. Thursday he was second with an 86.25 point ride. Sahli followed that up with a first place finish on Night 3 thanks to his score of 88.5 aboard Vold Rodeo’s Wolf Bait.
In steer riding, Hayden Mulvey from Brooks has gone 2nd, 1st, and 1st through the first three days of CFR 49. Mulvey’s 80 point effort was tops on Friday.
The first two of this year’s champions have been crowned. It was close in novice saddle bronc but Jaret Cooper from Vernon, B.C. placed first on Friday with a 76 point ride and that helped him get up to more than $20,800 dollars for the season. Cooper claims the title by outlasting Dylan Young from Sturgeon County who was second on Friday with a 72.5 point ride. Young wound up second in total earnings as well – a little less than $400 dollars back of Cooper.
It was even closer in novice bareback with Chase Siemens from Chetwynd, B.C. using a third place finish with a 71.75 point ride on Friday to get past Austin Broderson from Turin. Broderson was first last night with a 75 but he finished less than $100 dollars for total earning back of Siemens who wins the championship with just over $12,500 dollars this season.
Plenty of action is on tap today on Day 4 of the Canadian Finals Rodeo. The Saturday double dip of rodeo excitement starts with a performance at noon, followed by another at 6pm.
CFR 49 will then finish up on Sunday at noon.
