Public Grand Opening – Didsbury Museum

Lovers of historic vehicles are in for a treat as the Didsbury and District Historical Society reveals one of their latest donations – a Democrat Carriage (buggy), built between 1900-1905 and purchased by a local family in 1921. It is a 2-seater horse drawn vehicle designed to carry a family, featuring large wooden wheels and a tufted leather seat. Stories of this buggy are featured in the Harmattan History Book, which is available at the Didsbury Museum Library.
The provenance has been confirmed by a carriage specialty museum in Alberta. Commencing as a 4-H project, the restoration took the donor (Mr. Gary Russell) and his daughter many painstaking years to complete.
This donation represents a significant addition to the Museum’s collection, and carries stories of its use and restoration throughout the 20th century.
We recognize the great honour of being given the opportunity to be custodians of this amazing piece of history, and are very excited to launch this “Official Opening” for the public beginning May 27th.
